Day 9: You ever try replacing a cockroach’s blood with root beer? – Dale Gribble

Day 9 was the day to relax! The room we ended up in was an ocean view, we had a decadent dinner that would have made Caligula jealous, and we took a Water Journey. But all of that in good time because we spent the day seeing some other great stuff. For those of you who know who Dale Gribble is, you can probably guess we saw the largest bug in the world! The giant weta? Not that shrimp! I’m talking about the largest bug!

Small Adventures #1-5

Herein lies the tale of my 40th year. What I mean to say is below are some of the additional 27 adventures I’ve taken to make it up to 40 adventures in a year! If you’ve been following each of my monthly large adventures, you might be disappointed with the size/excitement of these. If that’s the case, move to another blog that has more money and vacation time. That cattle drive tapped me out. These are the small adventures for which I still had some time and money left over.

Forty Adventures #9H – January

I’m more or less a morning person. I like to get up and do what I have to do. Normally if I have to travel somewhere I start early but we were able to get better rates if we caught a night flight home. That makes me anxious because all day I feel like I’m looking at my watch. For this trip though, it worked out perfectly! Had we left in the morning, I would have missed a most serendipitous discovery! Peep below for more pictures and my fantastic find! Also trolls, pennies, and ice cream…

Forty Adventures #2 – June

Second month, second big adventure. The weekend of 6/21 I took part in The Green Mountain Adventure Challenge hosted by Vermontime. There are three different challenges but because of limited time and money only took on the Dover, VT challenge. This thing was hard! We found out it’s a social event, we wouldn’t have really gotten started had it not been for 2 other groups. One of those groups would have never finished without us. It was less physically challenging (except the end) than we thought but much more mentally challenging.

Great things are done by a series of small things brought together. – VVG

The weekend after Valentine’s Day 2019, one of my favorite museums had a fun and strange event. The American Visionary Art Museum has a rotating collection that displays “outsider art.” Basically it’s from artists who are self-taught and can include anything from prisoner sock art to William Burroughs’ shotgun paintings. I’m always hopeful I’ll see John Waters at one of my visits but continue to strike out. I digress, I decided attending the AVM event should turn into a weekend in Baltimore!

Time to make the donuts.

On part/day 2 of my journey it rained for 24 hours. This wasn’t just a light mist or gentle shower. There were gale force winds that turned our umbrellas inside out, the streets flooded causing detours on our walks through Salem (yes we still went out), and our faces and jeans were soaked by the horizontal onslaught of rain drops. To top it off, Dr. Jen was sick with a stomach bug causing her to eventually upchuck (she might hate that I wrote that). She was a trooper about it and I still had fun (am I an asshole for enjoying myself while she suffered?)!

You’re not famous until you’re a Pez dispenser. – CF

The weekend before Halloween I went on a bucket list adventure that turned into a lame but funny disaster. I’ve long thought Salem, Massachusetts would be a fantastic place to celebrate one of my favorite holidays. It might be but I’ll have to go back to find out. I did see some wannabe The Craft era Fairuza Balks, but everyone was too soaked and covered to really show off any costumes. This trip is gonna be written as a two parter to keep the posts of a manageable size. My senior year English teacher told us that our writings should be the length of a pretty girl’s skirt. Long enough to cover the subject, but short enough to keep your interest. That shit would never fly in school today.  Feel free to not read and just look at the fun pictures.

“At Motel 6 in Amish Country I wonder if they leave the light on for you?” – JL

I squeaked a trip in just under the wire. My one summer road trip was on Labor Day, basically what I consider the end of the season. I’ve been working non-stop and have had little time to do anything, so I’m extremely happy for my respite driving into and through Amish country. It’s been forever since I traveled, blogged, or basically did anything in life. I’m totally going to change that…maybe…we’ll see…who knows?

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.” – MT

One of the big items on my mom’s bucket list was to go to Ireland. She always wanted to go with my dad and kept putting it off. Sadly my dad passed having never left the country. When my mom got sick in 2015 I promised when she was better I was going to finally take her. True to my word, I took my mom for her first trip out of North America at the end of April 2018.
